Okay, I'm liking the new job. working third shift is going to take some getting used to but all in all I believe working here will be a good fit. There seems to be room to grow and of course that's a plus. With that in mind I've decided that it may be time to look into getting a degree. I always thought about taking some classes just for the fun of it but never really considered getting a degree before. I figured I didn't really need it since I planned on driving my truck and pulling my trailer for a living. I had started what I thought would be my business. Remember what I said about life laughing while we make plans, well there is goes again. Anyway, I figured if I want to get ahead in what is now more than likely an office job life, that I better get my uneducated ass some schooling.

So I've decided that I need to get myself a degree. I figure a business degree would be the most useful. This is where I am so grateful for technology. There's no way I'm going to try fitting in the time to drive to a campus to take classes while trying to work full time third shift, take care of my 4yr old grand- and three dogs, and maintain my household. There just isn't enough hours in the day and my flux capacitor is busted. So online classes here I come.

Okay going to speed through a few months here. Get us caught up with the present. First of all we all know what phantom pains are. Well we all think we do, I thought I knew what they were. I was wrong, I did know what they were but boy did I not understand what they were. The feeling of needles stabbing my left foot is bad enough. My personal worst was when my left calf or foot would start itching like mad. How the hell do you scratch something that isn't there? I really thought I was going to lose my mind there. We'll just have to assume I made it through that with my mental capabilities all in tact. Any way, those lasted for about three months. I still get them on occasion but no where like I used to. The weirdest one is where we had a gate at the top of the stairs, every time I stepped down through is, I swear it felt like my left ankle hit the bottom of the walk way.

Toddlers are funny creatures, all full of wonder and curiosity. I had many reasons I gave my grand- when she would ask what happened. My favorite was when I told her that her mom stole it while I was sleeping and sold it. Or when I said I had left it somewhere and couldn't remember where I put it and to let that be a lesson to always put things away. Amputation is now a word in her vocabulary. She comes up to be and goes "Paw Paw I hurt my leg, I need to amputate".

Now I had always said that once I got off the road I was going to get myself back in shape. After the amputation I had even more reason to workout. So I Joined the YMCA in December and started hitting it three times a week. After my stump fully healed I added the pool into my workout and it turned into six days a week. Pool on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Weights on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. Add in the some Krav Maga on two nights a week and I've made myself one nice work out schedule. I know I've seen some progress.

Seeing that I've been a trucker for the past seventeen years, I figured finding a job as a dispatcher was my best bet. Something my years behind the road can come in handy a bit. Well I found one and tonight is my fourth night. Now I'm naturally a morning person but this job has me working 2am to 10am. This schedule I can get used to easily, it allows me to go to bed about the same time as Erica (my grand-) and with her starting pre-K in the fall I'll be home in time to pick her up. Her mother will have to drop her off. Another bonus is that I don't have to quit Krav, that was my fear, I love that class too much to want to give it up. Again, this will work nicely. Now the training schedual is another matter. 7pm to 3:30am, I just can't find a good sleep routine with this one. In life some rain must fall, isn't that right. In other words, get over it and get through it.

A new begining

Not too long ago I was an owner/operator truck driver. For the last year or so of my carrier I was thinking about hanging it up. Getting myself some land in the mountains and setting up my little hidey hole. Couple years of hitting it hard and I would have the means to become that preverbal hermit in the hills. Well, do you hear that sound in the background? That's life laughing while you plan.

Now on with my little story. For those who don't know, to be able to legally drive a commercial vehicle, you must have a currant DOT physical. Mine was fixing to expire in November. So like the good little boy that I am, I had my deliveries set up to get me home just after the middle of October. So I unknowingly started my last week of driving looking foreword to getting home and having a much needed ride on my bike.

Halfway through that week I began to feel sick. Fever, chills, sweats, you know, all the fun stuff. Friday I get my last delivery done and of to the house I go. At this time I know I'm not heading to my bike, I'm heading to the hospital. For in two days I went from what I earlier described to barley able to walk. If I hadn't had my cane in the truck with me, I would of been unable to even get out. I get to the hospital, they check me in and within an hour I'm admitted.

After all the enjoyable things doctors like to put us through, they determine that for the second time within eight months, I've a staph infection in my lower left leg. After a few more tests, they determine that it's in the bone and that my two options are either amputation or life time antibiotics.

Okay, like anyone, I do my research into the latter and find all sorts of problems with that route. I'll start with the obvious, as we all know, after awhile we build ourselves a tolerance. Due to this tolerance you become unable to fight the simplest thing with a small bottle of lets say amoxicillin. You now must go straight to IV antibiotics. Fun! Now for the final thing I found. With a life time regiment of antibiotics, it eventually goes after your own natural bacteria. Yeah, that was a hard pass.

So, on October 30, they took out the saw and chopped that sucker off. I swear, I've never lost ten pounds so fast. Four day's later I'm home. I had a few visits to outpatient physical therapy but what they put me through was nothing compared to home therapy. Living in a split level home, with the bedrooms upstairs and the laundry all the way downstairs, that was work on it's own. Add in the fact that I was also having to keep up with my three year old grand- and three dogs. Now that's physical therapy!
