The older one gets, the less significant ten years becomes. At 28, we feel it would not be appropriate to date an 18 year old, however, if things were peachy with a 38 year old, we might be game. Dating someone the same age as our parents would be a little weird, for us, as well as dating someone young enough to me our child. But ultimately, we feel after a person is 25 years old (and their brain has finished developing... lol), go nuts and date whoever older you are comfy with (and of course, if you are older, maybe don't be trying to date younger than 25. Youths (18-25?) dating within 3 years - give or take a few years - of their own age seems appropriate. A person is an "adult" at 18 (in Alberta, anyway... 19, 21, 25... etc, elsewhere). Do what you will - it's legal - but we don't feel it is necessarily that most healthy thing.
